cassiopeia

5th May, 2006 - 2:47 am - Atlanta, GA - 7 lbs., 9 oz.
Once the woman was under general anesthesia, they gave us gowns to wear and brought us into the birthing/operating room. Had everything curtained to hide the gory bits, of course. But we watched the healer lift her above the curtain. They tied and cut the umbilical cord, cleared her mouth, did the whatchamacallit, the APGAR assessment, and a gentle version of Scourgify to clean her.
And then they wrapped her in a blanket and handed her to Harry, to bring to the waiting room. I had to guide him in there; he couldn't take his eyes off her. Just utterly wrapped up in her. And I wrapped my arms around them both and rested my forehead against Harry's, and we just stood that way awhile.
Then I got to hold her. Inspected the baby toesies (so TINY!) and the baby tummy (so SOFT!). While I was holding her, the nurse came in with a bottle of colostrum pumped from Jen while she was unconscious, and I held it to Cassie's lips and watched her suckle. Fed our baby girl for the first time. She makes these soft little grunting sounds when she's eating.
Harry burped her, and I scourgify'd his shirt afterwards. Then it was Grampaw's turn to hold her. And then there was just enough time to kiss her forehead and her sweet soft little cheeks before the nurse came to take her to the nursery to rest.
There's a "family room" waiting for us upstairs, near the nursery, with a rocking chair for feeding time and a reasonably comfy bed for us to crash in. We'll settle in here until it's time for her to come home with us on Saturday morning. Standard operating procedure for a wizarding hospital, so much more civilized than the mainstream version. And they'll wake us up for feeding time, and we'll be able to see her again.
Our Cassie. Our very own little baby girl.
She's beautiful.
